Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize organs within the body. It is non-invasive and is very safe, but it does require an appointment to see a doctor.
The ultrasound system works by sending high-frequency sound waves into your body through a transducer (or probe) that is positioned on the surface of your skin. As the waves travel through your body, they produce echoes that are then reflected back to the transducer and a picture is created. The image is made up of shades of grey and provides information about the structure of your organs.
It is used to visualize structures that cannot be seen with x-rays, such as a kidney or lungs. It can also be used to visualize blood flow in veins and arteries.
A vascular Ultrasound Markham examination may be used to diagnose a blockage or disfunction of a blood vessel. This test may help to determine the cause of a stroke, heart attack or other artery or vein problems. It is usually done with a Doppler ultrasound study which allows the doctor to see how well blood is moving through the artery and veins.
Your ultrasound exam will be performed by a trained sonographer and will be recorded. The images will be sent to a registered ultrasound technologist who will interpret the results and provide you with a written report. The sonographer will contact you after your exam to discuss the results and answer any questions that you have.
